The Slow Take

Mindfulness that ignores the world tends to become self-absorbing. In Solace we want our readers to be informed, to be aware, yet have the tools to stay positive and present.

Much of what we watch on TV news or we experience is defined by suffering and sadness, by loss and grief. Journalists are trained to absorb this reality. But most people are not used to it. Most people feel distress, alone, exhausted. So, in the creation of the idea of Solace website, we decided that instead of adding to the noise, we will offer pause! Solace focuses on calm, reflection and small moments of relief, providing space for mindfulness and stillness in an increasingly chaotic world. Solace is shaped as an answer to the moment we live in. A place to find solace, small pleasures and moments of inner peace.

A place to feel grounded and stronger, to support emotional clarity and resilience, especially in situations of prolonged social upheaval. Avoiding the news is not an answer. Mindfulness isn’t turning away from suffering—it’s learning to see clearly and stay present with it. Being aware is power.

At this section, “The Slow Take” , every week, will try to look closely at an issue of interest on the world news agenda.

This week we focus on Iran, the demonstrations taking place in many western cities in support of the Iranian people and how the situation is evolving.

Solace team was at the demonstrations taking place outside the Embassy of Iran in Athens. Protest in support of the people in Iran, as demonstrators said, in support of their friends and family, with whom they had no contact since the internet was down. Participants held signs and chanted slogans as police monitored the area. The footage documents the atmosphere on the ground and the actions of those involved during the event (16.01.26). According to Human Rights Organizations killing of protesters even exceed 30,000 deaths while Human Rights Watch has warned that the situation is likely to deteriorate further in the coming months. Women in Iran face severe oppression under compulsory dress laws and widening crackdowns on rights-defenders, with arbitrary arrests, harsh punishments and even death sentences to silence dissent. Their resilience and calls for “Woman – Life – Freedom” reflect both the brutality they endure and a mindful refusal to surrender dignity and autonomy. Supporting the women in Iran is an act of support to women everywhere in the world. Practicing gratitude for what we consider a given in the West is there to remind us how fragile liberties are and democracy is. We should all be thankful to those women, to all the people of Iran that defend with their lives ideals non of us should ever dim the light on.
